Breaking down the Tejas Mk1-A.

 




Nearly 30 years on after the HF Marut - India's first fighter bomber was retired (and 60 years since its induction, the Indian Air Force finally got a homegrown boy in their ranks with the Tejas. After inducting 40 Tejas Mk 1 in their inventory, the IAF has formally placed its order to the HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas Mk1-A for a sum of 48,000 crores. The Mk1-A is a significantly upgraded version of the Mk1 and the full infographic on the capabilities of the aircraft is attached below - 



In what would be a force multiplier to the manufacturing industry in general, Close to 550 domestic companies – large and small -- will benefit as a result of being amongst the vendor base for the Tejas – India’s first indigenously made fighter aircraft. For instance, the Fuselages for the aircraft will be manufactured by Dynamatic Technologies and VEM Technologies. The wings of the aircraft will be made by L&T. The Armory would consist of a blend of Indian and Israeli technology - with the Astra and the Derby Air to Air missile.

However, In today's battlefield, Electronic Warfare rules supreme and it is heartening to note that India's prowess in radar technology is slowly coming to the fore as the HAL Chief, in an interview confirmed that the Mk1-A would be equipped with an indigenously made AESA Radar - the first of its kind .The Electronics and Radar Development establishment (LRDE – A wing of the DRDO), in partnership with Astra Microwave and Bharat Electronics has developed the Uttam Radar - an active electronically scanned array radar capable of tracking targets of upto 100-120kms away. . The initial batch of the Mk 1-A would be integrated with the Israeli made ELM 2052 Radar and the later batches would be integrated with Uttam

Astra Microwave and Bharat Electronics, being prime partners in the development cycle of Uttam stands to benefit significantly as beyond the Mk 1-A , the Uttam would also be in contention to be integrated with the upcoming Tejas Mk-2(deliveries to begin from 2025-26) and the AMCA – India’s 5th generation fighter aircraft alongside the Twin Engine deck based aircraft for the navy.
